It's hard to imagine a more appropriate filling ingredient for small prayer pillows than balsam. There are several references in the Bible to balsam or balm, a resinous substance valued in ancient Greece and Rome valued as both perfume and medicine. The Latin word for the resin was balsamum, related to the Greek balsamon and the Hebrew basam, "spice." The Arabic word basham means "balsam, spice, perfume."

Fragrant substitute for a card
Karen Worcester of Worcester Wreath Co. talks about the prayer and inspiration behind the company's new prayer pillows.
A time of family strife resulted in Worcester Wreath Co.'s new hand-sized prayer pillows filled with fragrant Maine balsam.
Karen Worcester, wife of company owner Morrell Worcester, said the idea for the prayer pillow occurred to her after their youngest son, Corey, was seriously injured in a car accident. At the end of long days in the hospital, Karen would return to her car and cry into a balsam pillow she keeps in the car. The balsam scent, used for many years in aromatherapy, helped her to relax and focus.
