Fall was once Maine’s best-kept secret. No longer!
Visitors have discovered our lively harvest festivals, sparkling clear weather, and of course, Mother Nature’s brilliant display. Against a backdrop of rocky coastline and mountain pines, Maine’s vivid maples and oaks set the scene for hiking, biking, paddling and golf. Fall brings food and wine celebrations, agricultural fairs, and music festivals. Colorful farmers’ markets and produce stands beckon. Apple orchards invite you to “pick your own.” Birders spot migrating hawks, warblers and shorebirds. And there’s more: Fall is peak season for Maine lobster, too. http://www.mainetourism.com

For those of us over the age of 25, when you think of Halloween candy you think of candy corn, those sugary little spikes of Halloween cheer. They've been around for as long as I remember and even as long as my grandparents remember but did you know that they were invented in the 1880's? Who the first person to make these tasty treats was is unknown but the Wunderle Candy Company of Philadelphia was the first to go into commercial production. However, the company most closely associated with this wonderful confection is the Goelitz Confectionery Company. Founder Gustav Goelitz, a German immigrant, began commercial production of the treat in 1898 in Cincinnati and is today the oldest manufacturer of the Halloween icon.
We are so excited to share with you our Balsam Farm. For the past 11 years we have been cultivating our land to grow balsam. Now we are proud to announce that we grow all our own blasam right here in Maine.
I made a batch late yesterday. Evidently, I felt my life had somehow been missing petite fried nuggets of cinnamon-flavored batter stuffed with flavorful apple chunks and covered with a dusting of powdered sugar.
These are delicious, and my life is now complete. They can be served as a warm, yummy breakfast treat or as a scrumptious dessert with vanilla ice cream. (Did I just say that?) The easy route is to dust them with powdered sugar, but I love dunking them in a light, sweet, doughnut glaze, too.
Either way, these are guaranteed to make you smile.
