Early champions of the Olympic Games were awarded wreaths made of olive branches. Later on, head wreaths signified royalty, and other wreaths were used for military status symbols. Roman emperors wore laurel wreaths.

For Christians, the wreath has come to symbolize the season of Advent, the four Sundays leading up to Christmas Day. The first known uses of the Advent wreath date to German Lutherans in the 16th century. The Advent wreath is made from evergreens, (balsam in our case) to represent everlasting life brought through Jesus, and the circular shape represents God, with no beginning and no end.

Wreaths also are common at funerals as symbols of life, death and the immortality of the soul.
